Money, cards and payments
When you need cash, where cards work, ATMs and avoiding payment problems.

Cash still matters
General guidanceThe currency is the Indian rupee (INR, ₹). Hotels, larger restaurants and shops take cards, but autorickshaws, small eateries, village shops, temple offerings and many small hosts prefer cash. Carry small notes.
ATMs are easy to find in towns and cities but scarce in the hills, forests and villages. Withdraw before heading to places like Gavi or remote parts of Wayanad.
Cards and mobile payments
General guidanceTell your bank you're travelling so card payments aren't blocked. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted.
Most Indians pay by UPI (scanning a QR code). It normally needs an Indian bank account; some options for foreign visitors exist, but availability changes, so don't rely on UPI as your only way to pay.
Tipping
General guidanceTips are appreciated but not compulsory. On multi-day trips it is common to tip your driver and guide at the end.
