SIM cards, eSIMs and internet
Getting a local number, eSIM options and where coverage drops out.

Buying a local SIM
General guidanceForeign visitors can buy a prepaid SIM with their passport, visa and a photo. Airport counters and operator stores in towns can do this. Activation usually takes a few hours after verification, so buy on arrival rather than when you need it.
A local number makes WhatsApp, app cabs and booking calls much easier: most hosts and drivers use WhatsApp.
eSIMs
General guidanceInternational travel eSIMs bought before you fly work in India and avoid the paperwork. Indian operators also offer eSIMs, but these may need in-store verification. Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
Where coverage drops
General guidanceSignal is good in towns and along the coast but patchy in forests, deep valleys and tea estates, including parts of Gavi, Wayanad and the Munnar hills. Download offline maps and your booking details before you go.
