Supporting local communities, cutting plastic and respecting wildlife and villages.

Spend locally
General guidanceChoose family homestays, local guides and village experiences where the money stays in the community. Kerala's tourism department runs a Responsible Tourism programme that links visitors with local producers and artisans.
Cut waste
General guidanceKerala restricts many single-use plastics. Carry a refillable bottle and a cloth bag, and don't leave litter in the backwaters, beaches or forests. On houseboats, ask how waste and sewage are handled.
Respect people and wildlife
General guidanceVillages are homes, not attractions: ask before photographing people or entering private compounds. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and never feed animals.
