Safety and emergencies

The emergency number, beaches, monsoon hazards, wildlife and travel insurance.

Emergency number

Official information

112 is India's national emergency number for police, fire and ambulance. It works from any phone. Save your accommodation's address and your embassy's contact details before you travel.

Sea and water

General guidance

Many Kerala beaches have strong currents and steep drops, especially in the monsoon. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and flags allow it. On boats and canoes, wear the life jacket provided; if none is offered, ask for one or don't go.

Hills and monsoon

General guidance

Heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures in the hills. Avoid driving ghat roads at night, follow official alerts, and be flexible with plans in the wet months. Leeches are common on forest trails in the rain; long socks help.

Wildlife and forests

General guidance

Enter forest and tiger reserves only with authorised guides and on permitted routes. Keep your distance from wild elephants, including on roads, and never feed animals.

Insurance and health

General guidance

Take travel insurance that covers medical treatment and any activities you plan. Pharmacies are common in towns. Check with a travel health clinic about vaccinations well before you travel.
