Varkala's red laterite cliffs drop straight to the beach, an unusual sight on Kerala's coast. The clifftop path is lined with cafés and guesthouses, while the town behind it is an important pilgrimage centre with the Janardhana Swamy Temple and the Sivagiri Mutt associated with the reformer Sree Narayana Guru.
