For centuries Kochi was a hub of the spice trade, and its old quarters show it. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are walkable neighbourhoods of warehouses, churches, a synagogue and the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront. Today the city is also known for contemporary art, notably the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and for its cafés and galleries housed in old buildings.
Best known for
- Chinese fishing nets on the Fort Kochi shore
- Mattancherry Palace and its murals
- The Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town
- St Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India
Beyond the usual
- Walk the spice warehouses of Mattancherry with someone who knows the trade
- Take the ferry across the harbour as residents do
- Explore the art spaces that open around the Biennale
