Thekkady and the neighbouring town of Kumily sit beside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of India's best-known protected areas. The reserve is organised around a lake, with boat trips and guided walks run under the forest department. The surrounding hills are planted with cardamom, pepper and other spices.
